Featuring original music and new takes on old jazz standards, the Vince Kaufmann Trio comes to the Next Coffee Co. stage this Friday for an evening of live jazz.
The talented trio is led by Vince Kaufmann on saxophone, with Jessie Yarborough on drums and John Sims on upright bass.
Vince Kaufmann, a student at Deer Valley High School and a member of the Young Sounds of Arizona’s 7 O’Clock Band, was one of five Arizona students last year awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Summer Performance Program at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. Vince was also featured in last summer’s Jazz in Arizona Catch a Rising Star concert series.
John Sims is currently attending the School of Music at Arizona State University on a full-ride, talent-based scholarship and plays in both the ASU Concert Jazz Band and the ASU Symphony Orchestra. He was the second-place winner in the 2008 Arizona Bass Players Festival Double Bass Solo Competition, and in 2006 was a member of the Arizona all-state jazz band. A member of the Young Sounds of Arizona from 2005–07, John is featured on the YSA’s most recent CD release. John has performed with Pete Christlieb, Rebecca Mauleón, Carl Saunders, Butch Miles, Jacob Koller, Mike Kocour, Eric Alexander, Eric Schneider, Joel Spencer, and Dick Oatts.
Both John Sims and Jessie Yarborough were handpicked by jazz pianist Charles Lewis to perform as part of the group Charles Lewis and Friends, including a performance at last year’s Arizona Musicfest Jazz in the Afternoon. Jessie has also played as part of the Jazz in Arizona Monthly Parties.
