“I’m interested in contradiction. Most people believe at least a few things that completely disagree with each other. I try to embrace that and understand that. I think that’s why my music resonates with people.” The Cold Desert is the stage name of Phoenix multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Matt Klassen. At live shows, you’re likely to see him carry in anywhere from three to eight different instruments onstage, and sometimes play four of them at once! “It is a gimmick,” confesses Klassen. “But it’s also remarkable how it fills out the sound.” Blending traditional American folk music with everything from 1980’s British New Wave to Spaghetti Western film soundtracks, Klassen has invented a completely unique sound to go with a completely unique live experience. “Great music is about spectacle, about virtuosity,” says Klassen. “But there has to be that honesty, which is the only true currency in this world. Well, that and money.”
