(HE) AN UPDATE NOW … ….ON A CYBER ATTACK OM THE CITY OF NEW BEDFORD’S COMPUTERS — WE FIRST REPORTED BACK IN JULY. MAYOR JON MITCHELL SAID IN A PRESS CONFERENCE THIS AFTERNOON — THAT FOUR-PERCENT OF CITY COMPUTERS WERE INFECTED WITH RANSOMWARE. IT WAS FLAGGED BY EMPLOYEES WHEN THEY GOT INTO WORK ON JULY FIFTH. THE CITY IS NOW WORKING TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND GET EVERYTHING RUNNING BACK TO NORMAL. THE ATTACKER HAS DEMANDED AN UNDISCLOSED PAYMENT — HOWEVER THE MAYOR SAYS THEY REJECTED THAT OFFER. IF THEY *DID PAY IT — THE MONEY WOULD COME FROM INSURANCE AND NOT TAXPAYER DOLLARS. “Out of pocket expenses is not looking at much, if anything. Going forward, we’re going to have to spend some money on perhaps adding personnel to MIS and perhaps a personal security focus.” (HE) M-I-S — STANDS FOR MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS.
